Active Learners Active Citizens” engages learners of English in Greek Primary and Secondary Education with the School of English, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTh) in educational and literary projects in order to measure, study and draw valuable conclusions about the power of the literary and poetic word and social media to raise teenager social awareness and energize their participation in collective instances of activism. In an effort to propose a new methodology in digital age civics, new educational material will be developed as a means of multiplying the effects of the proposed project in the context of youth empowerment and active citizenship.

During the onsite school visits in the school years 2021-22, and 2022-2023, Greek learners of English in Primary and Secondary Education have been involved in educational activities that aimed at the transformative role of English literature and culture. The English language is taught through literature, poetry and culture for a change, by energizing those skills that allow them to be mindful, resilient, able to find ways to confront problems, and then help them find ways to change their own realities in the school environment. In order to highlight the transformative role of educational practice, particular emphasis has been placed on developing learners’ excitement and creating the opportunities to develop their imagination through school projects (whether attending onsite or online).
