The Laboratory of Narrative Research (LNR) is a teaching and research unit that is part of the School of English at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. It has been designed to bring together scholars and researchers from across the humanities, the social sciences and other scientific fields who have a special interest in the workings and the politics of narrative production.
Lab Director: Dr Effie Yiannopoulou
What happens when translating a play to be staged? Is the translation of a play a new, “autonomous” text that can stand on its own or just a copy of the original? Do translators retell/rewrite the story? To what extent does the relationship and cooperation between a playwright and his/her translator influence the final outcome? Is translation a form of (re)narration?
This is a three-hour seminar on drama translation run by Vasiliki Misiou (translator) & Aggeliki Darlasi (playwright). We will discuss the techniques and strategies that playwrights employ in the era of post-dramatic theatre, we will explore the way playwrights work with their translator(s), and we will attempt to lift the characters off the pages while translating passages from two plays by Aggeliki Darlasi (from English into Greek and from Greek into English respectively).
