This collage, along with the accompanying poem, is a visual and verbal representation of my experience in the Sappho and H.D. workshop. My collage demonstrates the impact of other people on our perception of an original work. To be more exact, Eva Palmer, Anne Carson, and H.D. helped me create my own perception of Sappho. The absence of the Greek poet from the collage does not intend to diminish her work, but rather highlight the elusive nature of both her life and her poetry. This is also the reason why Sappho’s name is absent from the poem, in spite of the speaker referring to her. As far as the content of the poem is concerned, it reflects the fact that this conversation between five women, Eva Palmer, Sappho, H.D., Anne Carson, and myself, has made me realize that Sappho’s poetry is not solely restricted to homoerotic overtones, but it is also an ode to Nature and her power.
