March 21

Today, March 21st, we celebrate World Poetry Day.

Since 1999, UNESCO has used this day to “recognise the unique ability of poetry to capture the creative spirit of the human mind”.

Poetry inspires us to (re)examine our world and explore different ways of being and perceiving.

Poetry has the power to evoke and invoke emotions, embodied memories, and deeply hidden thoughts.

Poetry allows hushed voices to be heard.

Poetry liberates us, challenges us, and invites us to go beyond ourselves.

Poetry points to the beauty of togetherness and sharing.

To celebrate World Poetry Day, students attending the Literary Translation course engaged in creative work. They unblocked their imagination, acting as poets and translators. Their work speaks to the creative power that lies within us all.

You are invited to explore their work by exploring this web site.

Happy World Poetry Day!

About the “H.D. and Sappho Revisited: Poiesis in Motion” project

The poems presented in this web page are part of the project “H.D. and Sappho Revisited: Poiesis in Motion,” developed jointly by the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece, and Stockton University, U.S.Α.

Both Greek and international participants have been invited to explore the relationship(s) between Sappho and H.D., to examine Sappho’s multifaceted and significant impact on H.D., and to think what Sappho means to them.

The participants’ work echoes Sapphic fragments and H.D.’s poetic work and, at the same time, it reflects what classical translation and (re)creation/(re)writing has to offer today.

All creative projects were first published on the Poeticanet platform.
