Soundscapes and Oral History

Eva Kubbos “Earth in Spring” 1968

Dr. Andromachi Vrakatseli
29 November 2022

Participants of this workshop will investigate how soundscapes shape oral history and what are the auditory qualities of the latter. Oral history is researched as a sonic event, a matrix that is related to acoustic perception, temporal and spatial coordinates, social and cultural values. Emphasis will be placed on the acoustic aspects of a walking interview. The sonic methodology draws mainly on Augoyard and Torgue’s notion of sonic effects that describe the sonic environment as a sum of actions and interactions. Steven Feld’s acoustemology is also considered. Feld focuses on listening to other’s listening that is mediated by storytelling. How the sonic effects resonate into oral history, how acoustic perception is embedded into oral history, how acoustic memory generates narrative and it is activated through visual stimuli and current acoustic experiences are questions that the workshop focuses.
