Date: 20/4/2021
Time: 18:00-19:30

This seminar is situated within the field of pedagogical lexicography. First, we will briefly consider the reasons for dictionary use, the innovative features of monolingual learners’ dictionaries, and the reference skills required for receptive and productive dictionary use. Then, we will outline the findings of a study that reviewed the dictionary-oriented materials included in the EFL coursebooks used in Greek state secondary education. The aim of the study was to determine whether, to what extent and what kind of dictionary skills can be developed through mainstream coursebooks. Finally, suggestions and examples will be offered as to how teaching materials can be modified or enriched with a view to developing learners’ dictionary-using competence in a more systematic way.
